Sen. Dr. Ipalibo Banigo Launches Yuletide Economy Drive, Partners Christmas in Rivers and UNESCO to Boost Tourism in Rivers West

As the Christmas season approaches, Senator Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo has called for greater youth participation in the expanding “yuletide economy,” highlighting the season’s growing impact on tourism, hospitality, events, and the wider creative sector.

In a statement, Dr. Banigo noted that the festive period goes beyond joy and celebration, describing it as a major catalyst for economic activity. She encouraged young people across the Rivers West Senatorial District to position themselves to benefit from the opportunities created by increased travel, community events, and demand for cultural and tourism-related experiences.

She pointed out that many leading oil-producing nations are now prioritizing tourism as an alternative source of revenue, adding that Nigeria is also moving in that direction. Dr. Banigo urged youths to “think outside the box,” using creativity and innovation to tap into the economic potential of the season.

To drive this agenda, the Senator announced that her office will support the Christmas in Rivers initiative in partnership with UNESCO, with the aim of preparing communities in Rivers West to take advantage of the yuletide economy. She described the senatorial district as one endowed with rich heritage assets and vibrant creative energy.

As part of the programme, her office will convene workshops for stakeholders in tourism, hospitality, and the creative industries. These sessions will focus on improving event standards, developing heritage sites to attract tourists, strengthening service quality across hotels and restaurants, and equipping young entrepreneurs to deliver exceptional products and experiences.

Dr. Banigo expressed appreciation to UNESCO for its commitment to the Christmas in Rivers initiative and urged other well-meaning organizations to support efforts to harness the seasonal economy. She emphasized that the benefits extend beyond Rivers West, offering opportunities for Rivers State and the nation as a whole.
